Apprenticeships

Having a clear qualification pathway, starting with an apprenticeship, helps make the mining, quarrying and tunnelling sector a more attractive career option for new entrants to the industry, including school-leavers.

For apprentices:

MinEx, in conjunction with MITO, have brought together an exciting opportunity for those who want to take up an apprenticeship in the extractives sector. The pathway starts with MITO’s New Zealand Certificate in Mining and Quarrying (Level 2). This training programme takes approximately seven months to complete and is most suited to those entering the industry.

Graduates can then proceed to the New Zealand Certificate in Mining and Quarrying (Level 4) training programme. It is expected that this training programme will take approximately two years to complete.

For employers:

Any apprenticeship scheme can only work with strong support from employers.

Employers must be committed to supporting their learner(s) through the training programme providing them with time off to attend the classroom training, or participate in workplace training, and pay the training fees associated with the apprenticeship.

Learners must be committed to completing the required elements of the training programme, which includes a mix of classroom and workplace-based training and assessment.

For those wishing to complete a Certificate of Competency for a Statutory Position, the New Zealand Certificate in Mining and Quarrying (Level 4) will include all unit standards required for a current A-grade or B-grade Quarry Manager CoC.

Apprenticeship Boost

The Government has made changes to the Apprenticeship Boost scheme, which currently supports the employers of any first or second-year apprentices with monthly payments from the Ministry of Social Development. From 1 January 2025, Apprenticeship Boost will be paid only in the first year of the apprenticeship and only for employers in targeted occupations.

The Government has now announced the targeted occupations that are eligible for Apprenticeship Boost from 1 January 2025, and all of MITO’s apprenticeship programmes are included: Process and Resources Engineering (which includes extractives and drilling) and Automotive Engineering and Technology (which includes both automotive and collision repair). This means that all MITO apprenticeship programmes will continue to be supported by Apprenticeship Boost. You can read the Government’s announcement here.
